Is God my Magic Genie Lamp?

Is God my Magic Genie Lamp-.png

Wouldn’t it be so nice if all that was required to make your dreams become a reality was just like the movies, where you rub a lamp and then, bam, everything that you could possibly desire is at your fingertips?  For some time I thought that God was my magic genie that would make everything perfect if I only rubbed hard enough.  Well let me tell you, I spent years rubbing my proverbial lamp to find myself only frustrated and in a worse place than before I began.  So, to answer the question posed in this title, “Is God my magic genie lamp?” No, He is not, but He is so much more.

The Lord is absolutely both the equation and the answer to having dreams become a reality. Psalm 47:3 says, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Verse 5 goes on to say, “Trust in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” That verse provides both instruction and a promise.

The instruction is to delight yourself in the Lord.  When I first heard this verse, I had no clue what that even meant. But I have come to understand that to delight myself in the Lord means to find my all in Him. That concept was very challenging for me to grasp.

For example,  most children fantasize about what their life will look like when they get older—they dream of being an astronaut or professional athlete and doing extraordinary things. Well, when I was a child, I remember very rarely dreaming of such wonderful things for my future. In fact, for some time, my desire was to no longer be alive and not have to endure the pain that was my reality. I thought a mediocre life full of pain was all that I could ever have. So I was unsure about the idea of then going and delighting myself in the Lord.

John 10:10 provides such powerful truth when Jesus says that, “I have come so that you may have life and have it to the full.”  God did not come and take on the weight of all sin so that we could remain in bondage and pain.  No, He came to give FULL life.

I have found that delighting myself in the Lord and pursuing this full life that He came to give is achieved in only one way: complete surrender.

Complete surrender hurts. It is difficult and it costs everything that you have.  There were things in my own life that I held onto so tightly that no one could pry them from my grasp, constantly fearing that if I let go, that I would never have anything close to the mediocrity that I then had.  But once I reached a place of not being able to maintain my pain any longer, I finally surrendered and surrendered everything.  And guess what I found out—it is worth it.

As I have gone through the challenging process of surrendering every piece of my life, all of my pain, my desires, my entire heart to God, the Lord has done something beautiful; He has given me His heart in its place.

Now to the best part, the promise.  God says that if we delight ourselves in Him, that He will give us the desires of our heart.  But here is where the really unbelievable beauty happens, are you ready?  Through delighting ourselves in the Lord, we surrender our heart to Him, and receive the heart of God in return, so now, our heart is God’s heart.  Meaning, that the desires of our heart are desires straight from the heart of God.

That concept still completely blows my mind.  Here is a bit of context from my own life to help firm things up a bit.  As I said, I used to not even have any desires beyond the slight hope of maybe one day being in less pain, but I still even doubted the possibility of that ever happening.  But through me surrendering my heart to the Lord and receiving His in return, I now have desires that I never thought possible.  I have dreams of becoming a counselor, speaking, writing, being married, having a family, and the Lord using my life too greatly impact the Kingdom of God.

Going back to verse 5 of Psalm 47 where it says that “Trust in Him and He shall bring it to pass.”  God did not give these new desires so that we can then be disappointed by their impossibility and them never coming to fruition.  No, He gave them so that He could bring them to life.

In my own life, I have already begun to see these desires, promises, from the Lord beginning to come to pass.  It is an absolutely thrilling adventure that has taken me beyond the realm of what I ever thought possible for my life.

So what is it that allows dreams to become reality?  It is the complete surrender of our hearts to God that brings life and joy and hope to the once most broken and empty places.
